What "banned" actually means
Approved: The paddle has passed the relevant org's equipment standards (deflection, surface roughness, weight) and is legal for sanctioned tournament play.
Banned: The paddle was on the approved list and has been removed mid-cycle. Usually after testing flagged a deviation from spec — surface roughness, core compression, etc. You can still play casually with a banned paddle. You can't play in sanctioned tournaments.
Delisted: Similar to banned but specifically means removed from the approved list. Often interchangeable terminology.
Never approved: Older or off-brand paddles that never went through the certification process. Casual-only.
Where to verify (always check primary source before tournament)
- USA Pickleball — Approved Equipment List
- PPA Tour — Equipment Standards
- APP Tour — Equipment Standards
Paddy's tracker is community-maintained and aggregates the three orgs above. Always verify with the primary source before a sanctioned event.
